Mission 2 - Water

Before we start this mission, your teacher will ask you to go home to fill a bottle to about 3/4 of its capacity and to place it in the freezer at home. You will be asked to take it out the next day and take a photo of what it looks like. We will also fill a bottle with water and leave it outside for a few days. Then, when we come to class, we will look at what has happened.

What happened to the water in the freezer? What about the water that was left outside? Can you explain these phenomena?

What other physical changes might you see on Mars?

We would like you to create a diagram showing how the different changes of state are interrelated. You must also include examples of each state change you might see on Mars. This will then be used for future astronauts.

This can be done:

  • on a page in your notebooks.

  • on a piece of paper which you then stick into your notebooks.

  • on your iPads. You then print it and stick it in your notebooks.

It will be marked as EX, VG, GD, PA and FA.

Then, to complete this part of the mission, we will make sure you understand everything by completing a Google Form.

Complete the Edpuzzle activity at home. We will also look at decantation in class and do an example together. We will finish with a Google Form quiz.

In order to survive on Mars, you need water!

Luckily, you remember that scientists believe that they have found ice on Mars. How could you obtain water from ice? Explain it to the class.

Now that you have the water, unfortunately it looks very dirty as it has stones, sand, salt and bits of metal in it. How could you separate them from the water so that you can drink it?

This needs to be planned with your team and you will need to bring the items you need to school from home.

You will then create a short video explaining what you did at each stage and why.

We will complete a second short Google Form quiz at the end of the session.

If you complete this task, you will get 15 million miles worth of fuel to get home.

If we don't have time to do decantation in class, we will use this YouTube video to explain it.
